Mauritshuis building for the future

Design

Light and Clarity

The preliminary design for 'Mauritshuis building for the future' was produced by Hans van Heeswijk architecten, a practice with around 25 years of experience of restoring and renovating monumental buildings.

Watch the film about the preliminary design.

In the preliminary design, the entrance, currently to the side of the Mauritshuis, is returned to the front of the building. The entrance, formed by a lift and an open staircase in the forecourt area, leads to the foyer. The iron railings around the Mauritshuis will be opened up, giving the building a more welcoming appearance.

Plein 26 will house an auditorium and a new exhibition space. This is also where the new museum shop, stylish café and offices will be located.

The underground foyer is more than just a link; it is a building in itself where visitors can orientate themselves during their visit. The foyer is entered from above, via the lift or stairs from the forecourt area. The open, light-filled layout gives the visitor an immediate overview of all that is on offer.

The extension of the Mauritshuis has been made possible thanks to the support of individuals, funds and institutions. The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science increased its annual subsidy to the museum by €1.5 million in 2009. The BankGiro Lottery contributed €2.6 million to the project.
